How often should I practise dance?
Four or five short sessions a week — ten to twenty minutes each — do more for a beginner than one or two long ones, because movement memory consolidates between sessions and each new session starts from a slightly higher floor. Practise a phrase rather than a routine, review before sleep, and take at least one full day off so the body can adapt.
Why frequency wins
Sleep does part of the learning. A phrase practised on Monday is cleaner on Tuesday morning without any practice in between. Spread the same hour across four days and you get three overnight consolidations instead of none.
A beginner week
- Four days: fifteen minutes on one phrase, recorded, one fix per run.
- One day: run everything you have learned so far, once, at full speed, filmed.
- Two days off, not consecutive if you can help it.
When to rest
Soreness that changes how you move, a phrase that gets worse across a session rather than better, or a joint that complains — stop for the day. Learning does not happen through fatigue; it happens after it.
Questions people ask
Is every day too much?
For short, light sessions, no. For full-out practice, a rest day a week keeps the joints happy and the progress steady.
