Dance

How do I practise dance without a mirror?

Replace the mirror with a recording: prop a phone, dance the phrase, watch it back. It gives you what a mirror gives, one step later, and it adds what a mirror cannot — an honest view from the outside, without you watching yourself while you move. Between recordings, use the feel of the movement, a shadow on a wall, or a webcam as a live check.

The phone is the mirror

A mirror shows you now; a recording shows you a minute ago, which turns out to be more useful because you can watch it with your full attention. Dance first, watch second. Most people who lose their studio mirror find their dancing improves, because they stop performing to their own reflection.

Live checks without glass

  • A laptop or tablet webcam on a table is a small live mirror for arm lines and facing.
  • A lamp behind you throws a shadow on the wall: a silhouette that shows shape and timing without detail.
  • Face different directions in the room as you practise. Choreography that only works facing one wall is not learned.

Feel, then verify

Practise noticing where your weight is and where your arms are by feel, then check the recording. When the feel and the recording agree, you have built the internal sense a mirror never asks of you — and that is what carries onto a stage with no mirror at all.
