Dance

Why do I look awkward when I dance?

Almost always because you are stiff, and you are stiff because you are moving less than you think: locked knees and elbows, shoulders up by the ears, a neck that does not turn, and moves that start a fraction after the beat. Each of those has a visible signature on a recording, which is why filming yourself finds the cause faster than feeling for it.

The four causes

  • Locked joints. Straight knees and elbows read as rigid. Keep a bend in both; the bend is where the bounce comes from.
  • Held shoulders and neck. Nerves lift the shoulders and freeze the head. Drop them; let the head follow the movement.
  • Off the beat. Starting moves late makes everything look hesitant. Tap the pulse with a foot until the count is in the body.
  • Watching yourself think. Small, careful moves look awkward; the same move done bigger looks intended. Commit to the size.

Record a phrase and watch it with the sound off first: stiffness and size show without the music. Then with the sound on: timing shows. Name the one cause that is most visible. That is the whole diagnosis; the fix for each is short and the practice is the same phrase again.

The fix is physical, not mental

Telling yourself to relax rarely works. Bending the knees works. Shaking the arms out between runs works. Dancing the phrase at twice the size for one run and then at normal size works, because the normal size now feels small and safe. Change the body and the feeling follows.

Questions people ask

Does confidence come first or last?

Last, and it comes from evidence. A recording that shows a move you like is worth more than any amount of telling yourself you can do it.
